In 1977 the world of pop music was shaken to its roots by word of the premature death of one of its superstars. The King of Rock 'n Roll was dead.

WDRC was quick to respond. Production ace Dave Overson produced a nine-minute montage of Elvis Presley's number one songs. The piece was narrated by program director Charlie Parker and it aired frequently over the next several days.

Parker also penned an ode to Elvis that was printed alongside the WDRC Big D Big Sound Survey for the week ending August 26, 1977 (right).
